In late 2016, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) issued a final rule that mandated revisions to the EnergyGuide labels for all split system air conditioners. According to this new rule, EnergyGuide labels for all split system air conditioners are required to transition away from SEER and EER ranges to single SEER and EER values, representing the lowest rated combination.

Per the FTC, the statement on the new label, which states, “Your air conditioner’s efficiency rating may be better depending on the coil your contractor installs,” is meant to inform the consumer that other coil combinations may have higher ratings.

The deadline for implementing this change was June 12, 2017. Because this rule was recently implemented, it is possible that identical models will have different EnergyGuide labels, based upon the production date of the inventory in question.
